What am I doing and where is my life headed?

This page is the closest I can come to a Blog, which there never seems to be time for.

My life has been through a shakedown during the last three years and no part of it has been spared. Like most transformational processes I’ve gradually realized that what I’ve learned and gained has by far outweighed what I’ve lost. Also I find that I am in the enviable position of having accomplished and experienced most of my life’s ambitions and aims.  Some of those things didn’t live up to expectations, and others were unexpected treasure. Still, what am I going to do next? This year I hope to set out on that new journey.

Physical activity and being outside have an equal measure in clearing my mental states. In the Pacific Northwest I Fence and what I love about it is that when you are fencing you can't think about anything else. I have become more involved with Tango for the same reason. I  bicycle commute and find that the constant challenge of going outdoors to meet the elements keeps my body alert. In the Tropics I love to dance. In the mountains I yearn to hike.

I am looking in on my aging parents twice annually.

Other areas of interest

Landscaping and gardening

Does the magic in the Earth respond better to some people? I think it does. When I was in my 20's I briefly attended Friends World College, Long Island NY. Between my work-study in the greenhouse, the tutelage of the school Forester, and Biology classes, I did an in-depth study of soil and composting principles. Later I received a scholarship to the 'Malachite Small Farm School' (ostensibly to study Fine Woodworking) and continued to examine agricultural sustainability and plant propagation methods.

In the early years of raising a family my husband and I established a large high altitude organic garden with French-Bio-intensive techniques. Eventually I moved more toward the low maintenance approach of Permaculture and spent many lovely garden visits back and forth with Jerome Osentowski of the Colorado Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute

This phase culminated in the design and implementation of a City Park in Basalt Colorado and several edible garden projects in the Roaring Fork Valley region on the Western Slope of Colorado.

Jewelry and Hayes Silver

I served a 6-year formal metalsmithing apprenticeship in the early 1980's with my father, Sir James L. Hayes KGC in Aspen CO. I am a skilled hand-fabricator; silversmith, goldsmith, engraver, stone setter and adept at jewelry design and engineering either on paper or in 3D software.

Jim and I have shared the Hayes Aspen Leaf jewelry line over the years. Throughout the past 25+ years I have created custom one-of-a kind designs and pieces for private and corporate clients. During the 1990's my shop in Basalt CO turned out the City of Aspen Awards, Aspen Volunteer Fireman Awards, Aspen Valley Hospital Awards, and Aspen World Cup Skiing Trophies, and the wholesale side of all Hayes Silver & Goldsmithing production.

Currently I sometimes assist in the Hayes studio during high season; you might see me there in December with Jim in our Christmas Elf guise; sipping coffee, working night and day, and warming our little shoes by the fireplace.

Video Game development (click for more info)

Games I see as a phenomena; a particular explosive expression of our culture, and as an artist that is irresistible to me. Add to that the work is a team environment and the collaborative nature of content creation is exciting, interesting, and often unexpected. As a process it's hard to top. But as a product...well the problem is comparing my game art to my fine art, and ..enough said. The opportunities are not there.

In this section you can see the many games that I have made.

Interiors (click for more info)

This was a house on Maui designed by Kutira Decosterd of the Kahua Institute which I did finish work on in 2006. Many of the carvings and some of the furniture in the house are my designs and I created a color palette for the interior.

The house has a wide range of textures which I created, from the velvety sandblasted marble floors, to regal faux finishes and hand gold-leaf applications.

Stories and Ramblings

Sometimes I need something to chew over or wring out and a written piece is an excellent activity when the urge arises. Are these any good? I don't know but I think they are better than chewing or wringing out a human being, and sometimes they are funny besides. I'm including them because many people have liked them.

However, keep in mind these are not journal entries or from-the-heart Blog posts. These are, like my artwork,  10% truth and 90% fiction. Please don't get literal on me.

Teaching

One of the ways in which we can be of the greatest service to our communities is simply to be available. I teach free of charge to all schools K-12 as long as travel and lodging are funded, and frequently mentor students through school sponsored programs. Please write to me if you have an interest.

Adult classes I will teach independently according to need ranging from one-on-one private instruction to company-sponsored workshops. (write for more information) Content, length, and subject are flexible.

Online oil painting tutorials can be found here.

Some past project information can be found here.
