Jess Bates 2009
2009 is shaping up to be a great year. Business has been down but I'm enjoying the less intensive work schedule. Family is in good shape. Physically I'm strong and healthy. Relationships have been rewarding, and the weather has been extraordinary.

I'm having a lot of time outdoors in the mountains and I really enjoy that. Now that I've been visiting Aspen frequently I have started to make friends and family matters have been on the upswing. All in all, life is going very well for me just now.

Biking in the mountains has been my pastime for the summer. My early efforts were mostly thwarted; I took two late winter trips to train but both were very inclement weather for cycling and instead I caught colds. Spring in the Rocky mountains was promising but in May I came down with Colorado Tick Fever.

Despite the setbacks I participated in Ride for the Pass, and have done a number of incredible mountain bike rides in Crested Butte and the Roaring Fork Valley, and I am looking forward to Autumn riding.

My son Tamas Bates turned 23 this summer, and we spent a few days together in Oregon at the Breitenbush Hot Springs at the end of August. Tamas is a Computer Science major at Western Washington University in Bellingham WA

Presenting the daughters: Jess Bates and Lynne Mace celebrating 60 years of handcrafted art and aspen leaf jewelry, and the creative visions of the Mace and Hayes families.  Toklat Gallery, 231 Midland Avenue, Basalt 970.927.1437

Hayes Silver & Goldsmithing and Toklat Gallery, both Established. in 1949 and now run by the daughters of their founders, had a celebration together July 17th.at the Toklat Gallery in Basalt, to mark the 60th Anniversary of both businesses; two of the longest surviving businesses in the Aspen area! Thank you everybody for joining us!

The company’s founders, Jim Hayes and Stuart Mace, have been known as distinguished, long-time local characters and artisans, and were part of the fabric of the early post-WWII Aspen community.

A 25-minute TV interview with Jess and Lynne about the history of these two businesses can be found here:      GrassrootsTV.org

Maui Hawaii, my second home (or is it my first home and Aspen my second home?) I still visit as frequently as possible.

Writing  is a continuing interest, and I've helped form a local group exploring Magazine writing. We meet once per month for critiques. Contact me if you are interested in joining.

Painting is a continuing interest, and I have decided not to take commissions for awhile and instead work on original concepts. Currently I'm signed up for a group show in 2010 at the Red Brick Arts Center. I have a couple of paintings in mind and have one model lined up. So far the canvas is blank, but I will post progress after I get started.

Blank Canvas!

Dance is something I really miss, and I'm working on forming a local Ecstatic Dance group.
