The Eco-House on Maui Hawaii is the owner residence at the small resort The Kahua Institute.

The Kahua Retreat is a sustainable 3-acre eco-resort fully dependant on solar power, bio-deisel and well water, and featuring several guest accommodations ranging from rooms in the original B&B-style house to secluded handcrafted bamboo cottages.

They are located on the North Shore in the beautiful rain forest on a high bluff overlooking the ocean, with a private 100-foot waterfall, and trails to the dramatic coastline below.

The owner and designer of this home, entrepreneur Kutira Decosterd spends an extensive amount of time traveling abroad and had amassed several full storage tents of building materials and treasures.

I designed several carvings made in Bali such as this door-top to raise the wide doorway.

These huge windows frame the expanse of the ocean below.

When I arrived the building had just been sheet-rocked in, and I took on the organization, treatment, and implementation of  the materials; and planned a color scheme which would enhance her variety of artworks.

The floors are coconut which I had rubbed down with a rose stain.

A home should be comfortable as well as beautiful. I had the legs of this handsome daybed cut down so that it would be easier to roll in and out of.

The lower profile also subdued it's bulk and made it more compatible with the simple Balinese furniture and floor seating.

I had this alter made to add a vertical element between the windows. Kutira added the mirror; when a person enters through the front door, the bridge walkway and massive carved surround of the front door are reflected around them as they enter. It creates a mystical depth to the house.

Above it there is a cupula in the center of the ceiling. I had the cupula lined with white stone carvings and there is another light string up there. At twilight these elements counter-balance the strong horizontal line of the ocean view.

For the upstairs bath (below) I created a stone faux wall finish outside and a bold one within to enhance the strong hardware and door paneling choices. On the vanity I  added  a circlet of gold to break up it's dark expanse.

Downstairs in the Master bedroom I had the pink marble sandblasted to a velvety texture to soften it's feeling on bare feet and to tone down the shine.

It's impossible to see in the photos but the walls are painted a very light spring green that is absolutely calming and refreshing and compliments the abundant gold's in the decor.

Kutira found a beautiful light fabric for these large sliding door drapes.

I designed this carving to cover the TV alcove opposite the bed.

The Master bath is mostly outdoors. Indoors I hand-rubbed this huge dark mirror with paint color and added some gold leaf to bring out it's detail.

The wall colors in here are actually a sea-green.

Behind the gold doors (above left) is a bidet closet with a burgundy faux finish (left)

To bring together the many elements of gold in the artworks, textiles and doors I added subtle touches of pure gold-leaf to the alcoves, kitchen, and selected areas of interest.

The kitchen, home of the hearth, is resplendent with a dragon theme. Small arched-back dragons knobs adorn the cabinet doors. I painted a gold dragon banner across the upper shelves, and these dramatic braces support the plank countertop.

Originally these came gold-painted. I scaled that back to illuminate the faces and hand-rubbed color to bring out the carving details.

The Eco-House was a wonderful result of collaboration between myself and it's Designer, Kutira Decosterd.
